Picture this: it's the week of the termly Movie Pub Quiz and you've found yourself signed up to DM it. However, you have no idea what to do! Fear not, though, this user guide is here to help.

Before the day

  • Check a few days before the event to make sure that the IT Officer has set up the appropriate Pub Quiz tickets on EPOS. These are necessary for when you cash up at the end.
  • Bear in mind that ticket prices might vary, so consult with the Quizmaster - for instance, there might need to be options with and without a bonus round.
  • Make sure that you have enough people signed up on the rotas - typically, three people including the DM and the Quizmaster should suffice.

On the night

  • A DM is needed to handle the floats and bank the money at the end. Count the floats as you would a usual show, transport the floats safely to the venue.
  • When people come to pay, there will be a sudden rush as they hand in their sign-up sheet, pay, and collect their answer sheets. Be prepared for this, as it can be a bit overwhelming!
  • Expect some teams to pay using a lot of small change. While people are typically honest, make sure to be ready to count each payment accurately.
  • Keep a record of how many teams there are, and what option they've paid for. This information should be contained in the submission sheets.
  • Afterwards, store the floats somewhere safe - your role as Duty Manager at the actual quiz is finished!

Helping out

  • Try to help the Quizmaster where required - for instance, by collecting and marking answer sheets.
  • Some people will forget to bring pens, so perhaps direct them to the bar. Or, if FilmSoc is feeling particularly generous, it could bulk-buy pens beforehand to be distributed on the night - something to consider, at least!
  • Make sure that someone has a laptop to tally up all the teams and their scores in a spreadsheet. Otherwise, you’ll have to do it all by pen and paper!

The end

  • Once it’s all over, DM override the tickets according to how many teams there were that paid for each option. Then, cash up as you would a usual show.
  • Well done, you've successfully Duty Managed a Pub Quiz!
