Improving Projection Presentation

Here is an opportunity for people to suggest ways of improving projection presentation. Please feel free to add or edit any other ideas.

The Commandments are additional things you should be doing for the next couple of weeks to help remind yourself how important presentation is and make sure you make the effort to project well.

The Commandments

These commandments are to be followed religiously until the end of October

  • Start each show with a determination to do the show the best you can.
  • Once you've finished lacing, walk away from the projector take 10 sec, come back and check your lacing. This means checking lacing thoroughly from start to finish.
  • Before starting / changeover check your lacing again.
  • When checking your lacing talk your self through the film path aloud
  • After changing over, stay with the projector for 5 mins. Make fine adjustments of focus or racking if it is necessary.
  • Remain down the other end to rewind the film for the minimum amount of time possible. The rest of the time, remain near the projectors, watching the show.
  • Do not do trailer changes or repair reels during a show.

General Best Practice

These things should be done on every show as standard.

  • Ensure your film has arrived and is made up 2 days before the show is due to start. If it is not here, the Films Officer should be notified with enough time (ie, the two days) to chase it up.
  • Pay attention to sound. Ensure that lip-sync is good and that there are not continual artifacts present as a result of a particular soundtrack failing, if there are try and select a different appropriate soundtrack if possible.
  • Before lacing read the masking tape.
  • Before lacing check the leader is the correct way round & spliced the correct way round, and check the leader to ensure that it is the correct reel of the correct film. Check as far as the splice between the leader and the reel of film and look so see that the splice is good and that the splice is in rack (soundtrack should meet soundtrack).
  • Before starting the show read the notes in the making-up book. Consider moving the making-up book into the main projection area, rather than the making-up area for easy access.
