Welcome to the Warwick Student Cinema IT team! If you're new, please see IT Team Onboarding to get started.
We are one of the five core teams, responsible for maintaining and upgrading all IT systems that FilmSoc requires. This includes (but is not limited to):
- The public-facing website at https://warwick.film
- The crew-facing part of the website at https://warwick.film, allowing crew to view and sign up to rotas, find out the latest news and edit the schedule
- Our EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale) system that is used on the tills
- Our other internally-used websites (e.g. this Wiki and the Discourse Forums)
- All computers used in FilmSoc
- The three PiSignage slide screens (both TVs in the science concourse, and one in the Projection Box)
- Our (very old) servers, including our Docker Swarm
- Our networking equipment, including our two firewalls and access points located throughout L3 and the science concourse
The IT team is run by the IT Officers, Josh Heng and Adam Skrzymowski. They can be contacted on Slack or via email (itofficer@warwick.film).
A list of IT team members and a bit about everyone can be found on IT Team Members (you'll need an account to see this!).
IT Work, Jobs and Stewarding
Unlike other WSC teams, the IT team generally work in a more casual and independent basis as we are not needed at every screening. In addition, a lot of work may only be on an as-needed basis, so you may not need (or be able to) work on things for several weeks unless you are helping with a project.
We would therefore would highly recommend that you also join the Front of House Team - this isn't as scary as it sounds and is a great way to get to know everyone else within FilmSoc, and so when you walk into the office people recognise you and know who you are!
Crew Status
Crew status is provided to all members of our teams and provides many benefits such as free films for yourself and a guest and access to our office. However, in order to ensure fairness between other teams, all members of the IT team are expected to actively participate and complete at least one task every 2-3 weeks (this may change on an individual basis/on the size of the task, depending on the IT Officers' discretion).
As there may simply not be enough tasks for everyone to do this, stewarding in Front of House would be a great way to maintain crew status, with stewards needing to crew 5 shows a term.
Communication
Main day-to-day communication occurs on our Warwick FilmSoc Slack workspace - you should receive an invite to this after you have completed onboarding. Please ensure that you check this regularly, ideally multiple times a week.
Longer-term or more controversial discussions may occur on the Discourse Forums - this is mainly because content lasts much longer and is not subject to Slack's 90-day message history. You shouldn't need to check this regularly, as we'll also send a message on Slack/email if we're discussing something here.
We also have a mailing list (it@warwick.film), but this is mainly used for notifying the IT team about news (such as meetings) rather than discussion. Anything sent here should be automatically forwarded to your email (remember to check your junk/spam folders!) but this can also be accessed online here.
Finally, the IT team also occasionally has meetings when there is a lot to discuss. We generally aim to have these at least once a term, but they may be more often if required. Meeting minutes can be found on the website.
GitLab
GitLab is the main tool that we use within the IT team, accessible at https://gitlab.warwick.film. You can login to this with your FilmSoc (desktop computer) credentials.
Each of our ongoing projects will have an Issue board which displays the current tasks that need doing. If you see something which you'd like to work on, assign yourself to it on the right sidebar so that nobody else starts doing the same thing, and then keep that issue updated as you go along. After you have completed the task, comment on the issue and mark it as closed. If you'd like to work on something with someone else/the IT officers, please just discuss this/let us know in the it Slack channel
