Making Up

Converting to 70mm

Projector mechanism

• Remove spacers on top/bottom of projector to accommodate 70mm spools.

• Convert 35/70mm rollers on sprockets to 70mm.

• Replace gate and aperture plate with 70mm gate and appropriate aperture plate.

• Replace intermittant with 70mm intermittant having the lesser worn side of the teeth against the film.

Optics

• Insert the beam spreader between the douser and shutters, this is done by removing a screw on the top of that section in order to remove the metal covering.

• Align the beam spreader by running the projector without film or lenses and changing the angle of the spreader until the dark ellipse on the screen is aligned vertically - Be aware that the beam spreader can become hot if the projector is running for a while.

• Insert the correct lens for the film, if the correct lens is not in a collar do not use the x-wide or scope ones.

Other considerations

• Masking needs to be checked and adjusted if necessary - follow Masking Controller if you're unsure how to change it.

• Tilt needs to be checked and adjusted if necessary.

• Formats on CP500 will need to be remapped, probably to format 42 and/or 43 depending on whether you know what format it should be in.

• If the film is in DTS then need to bodge the DTS readers onto the projectors so that the film path is clear.

Checking things work

Projecting the film

Converting back to 35mm

Basically follow the reverse of the conversion from 35mm taking care with hot beam spreaders and aperture plates. Any remapped sound formats or masking settings should be changed back and it's good practice to run some film through the projectors to ensure everything has been converted back properly, especially the tilt and focus.
